Cryptocurrency 101 – The Basics and How to Get Started



Have you heard about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, but you don’t know where to start? Do you want to buy cryptocurrency? Should you? Alumni, friends, and families were joined by Mike May and Chris Mercincavage to learn about the basics of cryptocurrency! Mike and Chris, two cryptocurrency enthusiasts, gave a presentation on the basics of Bitcoin and altcoins, shared more information on how this technology is growing in use — and how you could get involved.

About our speakers:

Mike May serves as the Director of Finance in the University of Virginia’s Office of Advancement, a position he has held since 2017. In this role, Mike oversees Gift Accounting as well as the department’s budget and finance functions. Prior to coming to UVA, Mike worked as an investment analyst in a family office in Alexandria, VA. Mike received his B.A. in Economics from the University of Rochester and MBA from Georgetown University.

Chris Mercincavage is a cryptocurrency and blockchain enthusiast with particular interest in engaging others through teaching the fundamentals of these emerging technologies. Chris received both a Master of Professional Studies in Information Science from Cornell and an academic certificate in Blockchain Essentials. Chris comes to us from Ithaca, NY where he has supported Cornell’s alumni affairs and development efforts for nearly a decade.
